Dr. Karen Leopoldino is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Geology at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC-Brazil). Her research and teaching focus on applied geophysics and petroleum geophysics. She is involved in with some research groups as the Center of Excellence in Petroleum Geophysics (UFC), and SDA and AASPI consortiums at the University of Oklahoma. She is currently a member of SEG, AAPG, AAPG Young Professional Brazil, and SBGf.
Her academic background:
Since the beginning of her journey as a geology undergraduate student, she already knew that she wanted to be a professor and do research with applied geophysics and petroleum geophysics. She graduated Magna cum Laude from UFC in 2014. Still, as an undergraduate student, she developed research with potential field methods (gravimetric and magnetic data) applied to the study of the Potiguar Basin in the northeast of Brazil. During her master’s degree, she worked with magnetotelluric and potential fields methods. Then, during her Ph.D., she was a Fulbright visiting scholar at the University of Oklahoma, and she worked with a large dataset of 2D pre- and post-stack seismic reflection profiles, in combination with well logs to create an improved structural and stratigraphic framework in the deepwater Ceará Basin, located in the Brazilian Equatorial Margin. She also enhanced reservoir prediction of complex sedimentary systems by classifying seismic lithofacies with attribute analysis, machine learning, and rock -physics. Recent publications can be found on ResearchGate and Google Scholar. Her research interests include seismic interpretation, 3D seismic attributes, subsurface imaging, and reservoir characterization.
